Session Overview:

In the face of increasingly pressing systemic inequities, foundation and nonprofit boards must change the traditional ways they have worked and instead prioritize an organization's purpose, show respect for the ecosystem in which they operate, commit to equity, and recognize that power must be authorized by the people they're aiming to help.

In an SSIR article published earlier this year titled “The Four Principles of Purpose-Driven Board Leadership,” BoardSource CEO Anne Wallestad calls for a reset on board leadership and offers a new framework for consideration. Since the article was published, Wallestad has been sharing the principles with philanthropic and nonprofit leaders across the country. During this session, we bring this important conversation to Iowa!

Join us for an exploration of the four principles and the implications of purpose-driven board leadership for foundation and nonprofit board governance. The session will begin with a fireside chat between Wallestad and Iowa Council of Foundations President Kari McCann Boutell about the four principles and what they mean for foundations and nonprofits, followed by what promises to be a lively dialogue with responses and discussion from Iowa nonprofit, philanthropic and board leaders. Our panelists will be:

  • Rob Barron, Executive Director, Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact (ICoF member)
  • Dr. Maria Corona, Executive Director, Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence
  • Dr. Matt Mendenhall, President & CEO, Regional Development Authority (and vice chair, ICoF board of directors)

We strongly encourage you to invite members of your Board of Directors and Grantmaking Committees to join us for this session. We hope this dialogue can help seed further examination of these principles at foundations and nonprofits throughout the state of Iowa.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the four principles of purpose-driven board leadership
  • Challenge assumptions about board governance structures and board and organizational roles in the nonprofit sector
  • Deepen your understanding of how these principles support more equitable practice in the nonprofit sector
  • Provide space to reflect on how your foundation’s structures and systems can be supported or enhanced by these principles to help inform a new way of operating
  • Reflect on your role in supporting equitable outcomes in Iowa

Who should attend?

  • Foundation executives who support organizational culture and operations
  • Foundation board members who oversee governance
  • Grantmaking staff who support grant programs and programming
  • Program staff who coordinate nonprofit networks and coalitions
  • Staff at new foundations that are establishing their grant programs and focus areas

Please join us – we think this session has something for everyone!

Our Speaker:

Anne Wallestad, President & CEO, BoardSource

Anne Wallestad serves as president and CEO of BoardSource, a globally recognized nonprofit focused on strengthening nonprofit leadership at the highest level — the board of directors. With expertise cultivated over more than three decades, BoardSource strengthens nonprofit leadership through research, thought leadership, and practical supports that help transform board structures, dynamics, and perspectives.

Anne was appointed to her position in 2013, after having served on BoardSource’s leadership team since 2008. She has overseen a period of remarkable organizational growth and change, helping establish BoardSource as a leading voice on issues of critical importance to the nonprofit sector and society as a whole. This includes the urgent need for nonprofit organizations and their boards to acknowledge and address how a lack of diversity in nonprofit leadership is impeding the social sector’s ability to serve our communities. Early in her tenure, Anne designed a shift toward a scalable model of program delivery that has resulted in a more than 500 percent growth in the number of leaders served by BoardSource since 2012 and led to BoardSource’s recognition as a top ten finalist for the prestigious Drucker Prize for innovation.

A 20-year veteran of nonprofit leadership, Anne has held leadership roles with a number of national and local organizations including more than seven years of leadership in the movement for LGBT civil rights at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and the Human Rights Campaign. Throughout her years of leadership within the nonprofit sector, she has cultivated deep expertise in fundraising strategy and leveraging the board’s fundraising role. Anne also has been honored multiple times as one of The Nonprofit Times’ “Power & Influence Top 50.”
