Interested in learning how your organizational culture either supports or detracts from your organization’s effectiveness?
Join Grantmakers for Effective Organizations in partnership with the Iowa Council of Foundations for a culture workshop designed for mid- to senior-level leaders who are looking to shift their organization’s culture to better align with their mission and values.
Through this interactive, full-day workshop, you will have the opportunity to deeply engage with your peers and participate in activities designed to help you understand and assess your current organizational culture and its impact on your effectiveness and the success of your nonprofit partners.
After this workshop, you will:
- Understand GEO’s culture framework and where your organization’s culture currently falls within that framework.
- Explore your current and aspirational culture while centering equity related to a specific organizational goal, challenge or opportunity and identify next steps for making progress.
- Learn approaches for assessing and strengthening alignment between stated organizational values and actual behaviors.
Speaker Bios:
Nichole Hoeflich, Director of Programs, GEO
Nichole Hoeflich is a director at Grantmakers for Effective Organizations. GEO is a diverse community of more than 450 grantmakers working to reshape the way philanthropy operates. The community is committed to advancing smarter grantmaking practices that enable nonprofits to grow stronger and achieve better results. As part of GEO’s program team, Nichole supports content planning and development for GEO conferences, remote learning opportunities, publications and other programming.
Before joining GEO she worked at the Center for American Progress as a Graduate Student Fellow on their K-12 Education Policy team. Prior to this, she taught high school social studies at Ivy Collegiate Academy, an international boarding school in Taichung City, Taiwan, where she also served as the dean of students and the social studies department chair.
Nichole earned her masters of science in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College and her bachelor of arts in history and education from Clarke University.
Joyce Kim McDonough, Program Development Manager, GEO
Joyce Kim McDonough brings over two decades of experience in education, nonprofit program management, and strategic development. Her career spans roles in philanthropy as a grant maker and development director, education consultant, and classroom teacher. Joyce still considers herself a teacher, stemming from her first students as a Teach For America 2002 corps member in the Mississippi Delta, which cemented her passion for equity and social justice. Prior to joining GEO, Joyce worked as a consultant for SchoolWorks, a national education consulting firm with the mission of advancing all aspects of student learning and well-being.
In her free time, Joyce enjoys being active – both in her community and on her feet. She is most proud of her family, especially her three children.

Cost
This meeting is a bit different than our traditional ICoF quarterly meeting structure, in that we are bringing GEO in not just as a speaker, but to run one of their programs. This event will be open to other GEO members, as well as non-members. As GEO's cost structure has changed lately, so too has our pricing for this event.
For the 2025 Summer Quarterly Membership Meeting, each registration of an ICoF member will be subsidized at 50%, so the fee to members per registrant is $150. In addition, take note of GEO's cancellation policy, below.
PLEASE NOTE: GEO's Cancellation/Refund Policy
All workshop registrations are non-refundable. No requests for refunds will be granted for no-shows. Participants may choose to transfer their registration to a colleague or peer with the same registration level. Transfers must be requested to Laura Riordan Berardi at lberardi@iowacounciloffoundations.org by Friday, July 11, 2025. No refunds will be issued for transferred registrations.
Location + COVID-19 Safety Precautions
Our meeting will be held at the offices of the Nationwide Foundation. Attendees assume all risk and responsibility related to possible virus transmission at an in-person event. On the registration form you are asked to review and agree to a COVID-19 liability waiver. If you become ill, test positive for, or are exposed to COVID-19 prior to the event, please stay home and take care.
